Explaining Surrogacy to kids

Week 21

Current Week… 22

My belly is a growing! I can now feel lots of movement from the little ones in my belly. They were going nonstop this morning at 7:30 am. I hope they are this active next time their mommy and daddy are around.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! It’s bitter sweet being pregnant over the holidays because I want to eat way more than I have room for. Although I only had one small plate on Thanksgiving Day I made up for it by eating ½ a pumpkin pie, ¼ coconut cream pie, a slice of carrot cake and lots of Hawaiian sweet bread over the next 3 days (all items that if it weren’t for the holidays they wouldn’t be in my house).

Back to the gym I flew! Nothing like leg day to bring me back to it! The looks I get are pretty funny, I think I need a shirt that says “Lifting for 3, No excuses!” Multiple men have helped me rack weights. Pretty funny, I go to the gym to lift weights yet here are people lifting them for me, chivalry is not dead.

Now for the topic of the day, explaining surrogacy to little ones. A woman in a Surro group was wondering how & if she should tell her kids. For those who have been keeping up with the blog you know that my daughters are very involved, it makes the experience that much more rewarding. Very early on my IP’s purchased a book called The Kangaroo Pouch, this helped a lot. I constantly get “Are the babies big enough to go to their mommy and daddy yet? I don’t want them to be sad anymore”.  Explaining that I have babies being in my belly has also explained so many things that are temporarily different i.e. morning sickness, why I can’t jump in the bounce house with them, why I can’t go on carnival rides, why my belly is growing and much more. They are very excited for the mommy and daddy and I’m very thankful for this experience and the opportunity it has given me to show my kids that you can help others in many different ways.

My IP’s recorded themselves reading poems and bedtime stories. At night my daughters and I lay in bed and they take turns holding the recorder on my belly. Little things like that make them very happy because they are “helping”.

Every x-mas I donate clothes and gifts to the less fortunate. When I was young this is how we would receive presents and I have been ever so grateful to those generous people. I have told them during this time we don’t shop for ourselves we shop for others. Lately my daughters have been asking if we can buy this and that for the babies, this whole time I thought they were talking about the less fortunate but no they’ve been talking about the surro babies! Thought that was something cute that I’d share.
Another random holiday tradition is ELF ON THE SHELF... here's our Elfy... yes he's a Niners fan!

XOXO Jenn

  1. Looks like Santa has lots of helpers at your house! It is wonderful how you are teaching and modeling for your children the importance of caring and sharing.
When I read this posting, I was reminded of the struggle I had with JM's grandparents (my mom and dad). At Christmas, I did not want my daughters to associate the holiday with Santa Claus. My rationale was that I wanted them to always believe that I told them only the truth. However, my parents didn't agree with me. They immersed my daughters in the Night Before Christmas, and they would take my daughters each year to have their photo taken with Santa. I guess my husband didn't agree with me either. When the JM and her sister were two years old, early Christmas morning he dressed up as Santa and climbed a ladder carrying a deer head. When he got to their window, he opened the window and said HO,HO, HO. Then he threw candy into their cribs. I wonder, as a grandparent, if I will be telling the McMuffins about Santa? Does truth change as one's perspective alters? I wonder what the IP's will be doing and saying this time next year. Merry Christmas to all!

  2. THANK YOU, Gianna! THANK YOU, Genevieve! Huggie arrived safely to New Jersey. I was tutoring a ESL student when the package arrived. I was so excited to see what was in the carton that I stopped tutoring and tore open the box. What a joy it was to find this adorable, cheery, smiling bear with its own birth certificate. I was so proud to show him to my student. Then I carefully placed Huggie under my Christmas tree. (JM has a photo to show you!) I bet this is how happy and proud I will be when the twins arrive. Thank you for taking good care of the babies in your mommy's tummy! I promise to take good care of Huggie!
THANK YOU, Gianna and Genevieve, for making Huggie for me!

  3. We revived the photo! And the girls are very glad you like it. Gianna loved Huggie, I let her sleep with him one night the following day she wanted to take him with her to daycare so I had to hide him, sneaky mommy :(

  4. Hope all these elves are having a very happy Christmas Eve and I know they will have a grand Christmas Day! I just finished baking German sugar cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies. We are going to enjoy them in front of the fireplace with apple cider spiked with cranberry juice. As we indulge in our Christmas Eve treats we will be thinking about you and your daughters and the McMuffins. Merry Christmas to all from New Jersey!
